Day 733: P.J. Harvey – Dry

Dry is the first album by PJ Harvey who is an English alt rock musician. It did quite well critically, getting a number of Best Of lists that year. Rolling Stone loved her, saying PJ was the year's Best Songwriter and Best New Female Singer but only one of the songs, Sheela-Na-Gig, got anywhere...#9 on the Billboard Modern Rock charts.

That being said, this album was alright. It might be that I'm not quite in the mood for this angry rock right now--been kind of a frustrating week--so it rubbed me the wrong way. PJ Harvey definitely reminds me of a lot of the angry female alt rockers that came out of the early 90's. She's got a powerful voice and the music is solid. The melodies aren't particularly memorable but it's got an attitude that can't be beat.

Overall, this album was pretty good. Songs like "Happy and Bleeding" and "Victory" have a dark energy to them in a dangerous but still fun way. PJ's got a lot of talent...I might revisit this album when I'm feeling more up to it. For now, 3.75 stars.
