Not gonna' lie. This album was crazy charming.
I know.
It was jazz.
Hush your fussing.
Now I'm still not crazy into jazz. I'm not into the slowness of it, it just makes me very impatient. However, I did like that this album had a bit of cheekiness to it.
Tom Waits recorded this album in a studio but in front of a live audience in order for it to sound like he was doing it in a club. Throughout the album he makes little jokes like "She's been married so many times she's got rice marks all over her face" and the crowd just laaaaughs.
I did like that there's a degree of energy and fun to it. Tom's got a strangely croaky voice but it doesn't bother me...it adds the smoky club feel of each song.
Overall, this album was a hoot. Tom does little intros for each song and cracks jokes in like every other line. He's darling and this album was a lot of fun. 4 stars.
