Day 338: Joni Mitchell | The Hissing Of Summer Lawns

Now Joni Mitchell. Now I guess if I was an old woman, sitting in my rocking chair sipping on a glass of wine and nipping at some cheese, I'd be all about this lady. I mean she's the musical equivalent of chocolate pudding...just smooth and unimpressive.

This album was very pretty, but just not crazy exciting. Joni, to me, sounds like the lady from School House Rocks:

I find her voice calming but in the same way that I find white noise of seagulls calming. I don't feel any substance from her music. I will give her some credit for adding some crazy ass bongos in the song "Jungle Line" which added a much needed amount of spunk this album:

Overall, this album was interesting but not that thrilling. The songs themselves were good but I'm not a huge fan of Joni's voice. So, averaged out, 4 stars.

Wow. I've read literally tens of thousands of music reviews in my day, and not one that has expressed such bizarre opinions. Mitchell is widely regarded as one of the greatest, if not THE greatest songwriter alive. Her lyrics are without equal. This seminal album has been hailed by artists such as Prince as being one of the greatest albums ever recorded. Joni's emerging jazz style of singing, and her complex, unique tunings and guitar playing were lauded by such masters as Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, and Charles Mingus. To read someone dismiss her as "smooth and unimpressive" is literally shocking. You say at the beginning of your blog that you know nothing about music. If you wish to learn something about music, Mitchell's catalogue would be a great place for you to stard.
